New TeleCaregiving Workshops in November—Learn from the Comfort of Home

To help meet the needs of families caring for adults with chronic illnesses, and to celebrate National Family Caregivers Month, California's Caregiver Resource Centers (CRCs), in partnership with the Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers of California, will offer a series of free telephone workshops in November.

Last November, caregivers from across California participated in the first TeleCaregiving workshops offered by the CRC system. Educational workshops for caregivers are regularly sponsored by all 11 of the CRCs at no or very low cost. However, barriers to attendance exist for many caregivers, including geographic challenges (distance to meeting places), scheduling conflicts, and trouble locating alternative care for a loved one.

Many caregivers feel bound to their homes. Physical disabilities, rural locales, or lack of transportation also make it difficult for some caregivers to attend workshops in person. Telecommunication makes it possible to receive education without disrupting caregiving routines and without requiring caregivers to leave the place where they provide care.

Three TeleCaregiving workshops will be offered this November:

  • Understanding and Treating Difficult Dementia Behaviors and How to Talk About It With Your Physician
Presenters: Ladson Hinton, M.D., UC Davis School of Medicine; and Terri Huh, Ph.D., Over-60 Program, UCSF School of Medicine
  • How Do You Know If You Have A Memory Problem?
Presenter: John Ringman, M.D., UCLA Dept. of Neurology, Kagan Alzheimer's Disease Treatment Development Program, UCLA Alzheimer Disease Center
  • Understanding Stroke and Vascular Dementia: An Update on Research and Treatment
Presenter: Freddi Segal?Gidan, P.A., Ph.D., Dept. of Neurology, and Director, Stroke Education and Research, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center

In these workshops, listeners can tune in as the experts offer practical tips on caregiving. Follow-up surveys from previous TeleCaregiving workshops reveal that participants find the service to be very effective and helpful. Many respondents reported that they appreciate the option to learn via telephone because of their caregiving responsibilities, saying it is too difficult to leave the home to attend a program in the community.

If you're interested in participating in this new learning experience, sign up today! TeleCaregiving workshops are free, easy, and couldn't be more convenient. Online registration is going on now until October 31. For more information about the workshops, visit the TeleCaregiving Online Registration website or contact your local CRC for more information.
